Poly-L-Lactic acid has been used as tissue regeneration material for more than 30 years, as well as surgical suture material. It was approved by the FDA in 2009 as an injectable rejuvenating treatment for the face. PLLA polymer is extracted from Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) which is known for its absorbability and biodegradability.
Nowadays PLLA threads have become more and more popular due to long-term collagen formation, and practitioners can use them for restoring tissue volume and rejuvenating the skin of the face.
PLLA biodegradation occurs through the process of hydrolysis in the period from 6 to 9 months, while the aesthetic duration of the results lasts from 12 to 18 months.
